The shooting death of a 5-year-old North Carolina boy in his front yard on August 9 has since erupted into a political argument over how the media covers race and crime, with conservative commentators on Fox News and other outlets criticizing the media for ignoring the fact that the boy was white and the suspect Black, though many national news outlets did in fact cover the killing, which both police and the boy's parents say they don’t believe was racially motivated.

Cannon Hinnant was shot in the head and killed in the driveway of his father’s Wilson, North Carolina, home on a Sunday morning while riding his bike; the following day police arrested next-door neighbor Darius Sessoms, a 25-year-old Black man, who is now being held on first-degree murder charges without bail.

Wilson police have not released a motive, and the boy’s father, Austin Hinnant, told The Wilson Times he believed there was “no racial issue” and that the night before the murder, he had invited Sessoms over to share a beer on his front porch.

Religious conservative blogger Matt Walsh—who has written for The Blaze and The Daily Wire, along with the HuffPost—tweeted about Hinnant’s killing on August 11, saying, “Reverse the races and this is the only thing anyone talks about for a month,” and “Say his name,” a refrain popularized by anti-racism protesters in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in May.

Hinnant’s name began trending on social media, and by Friday, Fox News host Tucker Carlson was asking why the media was ignoring Hinnant’s murder, while an onscreen banner during Friday’s broadcast of The Ingraham Angle asked, "Where is outrage over slaying of Cannon Hinnant?"
